FFXIV – Tales under the New Moon: An Exploration of Lore and Characters

Tales under the New Moon is a series of side stories that explore the past and present of some of the most beloved characters in Final Fantasy XIV. Read them online now!

Final Fantasy XIV has been captivating players since 2013 with its rich lore, diverse gameplay, and stunning graphics. For the 10th anniversary, to mark the end of one adventure and the beginning of another, the developers have released a new collection of side stories called Tales under the New Moon. 

These stories explore the past and present of some of the most beloved characters in the game. So far two out of the four planned stories have been released: As Azure Fades, and Bringer of Shadow, Bringer of Light.

Please be aware that Tales Under the New Moon contains spoilers from the main scenario. As a result, it is recommended that new players who have not completed the main story do not read them just yet.

The first story in Tales under the New Moon is As Azure Fades, which focuses on Estinien Wyrmblood, the former Azure Dragoon who fought against Nidhogg in the Dragonsong War. The story shows Estinien’s struggle to cope with his trauma and guilt from his past deeds as Nidhogg’s thrall, as well as his newfound friendship with Alphinaud and Alisaie. The story also reveals Estinien’s decision to join Ishgard’s reconstruction efforts as a way to atone for his sins and honor his fallen comrades.

The second story in Tales under the New Moon is Bringer of Shadow, Bringer of Light, which centers on Thancred, the master Ninja and Gunbreaker who served as one of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. The story depicts Thancred’s inner conflict between his duty as a Scion of the Seventh Dawn, even after they separated, and his personal feelings for Minfilia: his resolve to protect her, and the world, from any danger. It also gives insight on Minfilia’s past and General Ran’jit. 

Additionally, two more stories will release during the month of September, and players can read them online (once they are available) on the official Tales under the New Moon website.

Tales under the New Moon is a wonderful addition to Final Fantasy XIV’s lore and storytelling. The side stories not only give us more insight into some of our favorite characters’ personalities, backgrounds, and relationships, but also set up their future development.
